Hi everyone - I’m grateful you are here!

Updates:

This fall, I’ll be transitioning my practice to Soma Osteopathy and Wellness in Courtenay (1001B Fitzgerald Ave), where I’ll be working alongside other bodyworkers!

For September, I’ll continue to see clients at Nourish Wellness on Mondays. You’re welcome to email me to book an appointment. If you’d prefer to wait until October, let me know which days and times work best for you—especially if you’re commuting! Email: hello@janinescheffler.com

Soma Osteopathy is currently undergoing construction, and I’ll confirm my October schedule and appointments as soon as the new space is ready. My JaneApp calendar will be updated at that time as well.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Also, we’re heading into “benefits season”! Don’t forget to make use of your 2025 coverage and get the support you need before the year ends.

Wishing you a smooth and gentle transition into the autumn season. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

The remaining time will be for an acupuncture treatment and any other modalities (cupping, Gua Sha, Tui Na massage, moxibustion), if indicated. Subsequent sessions involve a brief check-in before starting the treatment. You'll have a chance to ask questions before beginning and questions are welcome throughout the treatment! Acupuncture sessions are covered by third party insurance providers and MSP benefits (if eligible).

Chinese Herbal Medicine

There is an additional fee for herbal medicine and your formula may be dispensed at a later time (usually within 24-48 hours of the appointment time).

Please note that herbal medicine consultations without acupuncture are generally not covered by third party insurance. Please check with your provider before booking if you’re hoping to have this appointment covered by insurance.

Hello! I’m Janine and use she/her pronouns. I’m a registered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, practicing acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The foundational training in TCM includes a four-year, 2,985-hour program in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, biomedicine, and clinical practice. I’m also completing the Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine program, having already finished 2,775 hours of theory and 903 hours of clinical training. My continuing education focuses on classical herbal medicine, Japanese acupuncture, and somatic approaches.

My interest in plant medicine began early in life. I still have books from my grandmothers on herbs and home remedies, a foundation later shaped by working in a compounding pharmacy, completing a BSc in nutrition, and exploring our relationship to food and body. I’m guided by my lived experiences with mental health and invisible disabilities, which shape both my TCM practice and how I show up for community.

I was drawn to Chinese medicine by its deep connection to nature, observation, and understanding how our inner and outer worlds are intertwined. Through the lens of TCM, seemingly unrelated symptoms, emotions, and experiences are understood as part of meaningful patterns—offering insight, clarity, and support.

I have been honoured to support individuals in a variety of areas, including disordered eating, mental health, sleep concerns, digestive health, pain, gynecology, and menopause. In treatments, I rely on a range of modalities, including Japanese acupuncture—a gentle form of needling and a palpation-based style—as well as non-needle therapies such as moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, Chinese massage, and herbs. Determining the best technique is guided by TCM theory and the belief that patients are the experts of their own bodies and that care should be collaborative, compassionate, and rooted in curiosity.

I’m committed to creating a trauma-informed, accessible, and gender-affirming treatment space where all bodies are welcomed and respected. My approach is 2SLGBTQIA+ positive, weight-neutral, and rooted in Health at Every Size® principles. I welcome people to reach out with any questions, concerns, or accommodation needs. In the past, this has included offering sliding scale options, adjusting the massage table to a seated position, wearing a mask during treatment, and scheduling family members together in the same appointment.

I have deep gratitude for my teachers and the practitioners who have preserved and shared this medicine. As a settler with mixed european ancestry, I continue to reflect on unearned privileges, the responsibility of practicing an ancient medicine, and how to live gently on the unceded traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.
